Guide to Thesprotia
The one and only land of Thesprotia: An experience that reaches all the senses, stretching from the western foothills of Mount Pindos, gradually sloping down to the sea.
Nestling among the foothills lie narrow valleys crossed by the rivers Acheron and Kalamas, while the area boasts a magnificent coastline full of idyllic beaches, small coves and picturesque harbours that starts at Sagiada and stretches as far as the beaches of Perdika. Sun, sea, mountain scenery, history and tradition blend harmoniously to impress any visitor looking to explore an enchanting destination with a myriad of variations.
The natural environment of Thesprotia enchants with its many changing landscapes: imposing mountains with lush forests and wildflowers, rivers, wetlands and endless lacy beaches, cliffs overhanging the sea, trees leaning down to touch crystal clear waters.
A land that invites you to discover it, experience it, take the time to walk through it. To take home some thyme and sage, to taste the honey and oil, basil and mint. To sample traditional family recipes, drink the tsipouro and the wine.

Epirus manages to be a one-of-a-kind destination: an enviable combination of cultures and traditions, with a natural environment unique in Greece, and it never fails to surprise and delight its visitors. Epirus is located in the north-west corner of Greece and is an ideal travel destination all year round.
It is located at the north end of the city and opened its doors to the public in 2009. The exhibits come from excavations in the wider region of Thesprotia and cover a period from the Middle Paleolithic age (100,000 BC) to the post-Byzantine era.
Located near Chrysavgi, it was an important ancient city of Thesprotia. It was the seat of the Thesprotian “Koinon” in the period (335-330 BC). The city is built on a plateau at the foot of the mountains of Paramythia having a view over the valley.
Souli consists of a group of four settlements (Souli, Samoniva, Avarikos and Kiafa), which are also known as Tetrachori (Four Villages) or Souliotochoria. They are located in a predominantly mountainous and in the past inaccessible area at the boundaries of the prefectures of Thesprotia, Preveza and Ioannina.
It is a small ancient fortification, located 9km from Igoumenitsa. It took its name from the fortified residence built in the same position during the Ottoman period. The ancient stronghold was built near the old estuary of the Kalama River at the top of a hill dominating over the Ragio – Kestrini plain. Its significant position provides supervision over the coast of the Ionian Sea and the wider area. Given the strategic importance of the hill, it was already inhabited since the prehistoric times.
It was one of the most important, political, administrative and economic centers of Thesprotia in the antiquity. The ruins of the city are located on the mountainside of Vrysella. A great landscape from many respects, surrounded by Kalamas river, which has greatly contributed to the economic autonomy of the city.
The archaeological site of Doliani is an ancient fortified site, built on top of a steep hill near Kalama River. It is a location of strategic importance ensuring the control of the wider region. The settlement coincides with Fanoti, a city of the Thesprotian tribe of Fanotians, believed by the historians to have repelled the siege of the Romans in 169 BC, only to surrender a year later.
Dymokastro or Elinokastro or Erimokastro are the most modern names of the ancient coastline position located near Perdika, on a hill that rises over Karavostasi bay. This is the position associated with ancient Elina, a city of Elinoi, a Thesprotian tribe.
It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Theotokos and was founded in the 1st half of the 14th century. Built on the southwestern slope of the mountain range of Farmakovouni, north of Filiata, it is one of the most important religious institutions of Epirus.
The Delta was created by Kalamas river at the point of its estuary in the Ionian, during its centuries-long course through Thesprotia. The Delta is contained in the triangle Igoumenitsa – Ragio – Sagiada.
South of Thesprotia, the Marsh of Kalodiki is one of the most beautiful wetlands of the area, serving as a station for migratory birds. The Marsh is surrounded by mountains and large reedbeds, and it's a much different type of wetland from the Estuary of Kalamas. Many aquatic birds (herons, ducks, warlblers) find refuge in the reeds. Predatory birds such as lesser spotted eagles, buzzards are visiting the site in order to hunt. In the northern part of the marsch, there is a large area covered by water lilies. During tha late of May the water lillies are flowering, thus offering a unique spectacle for the visitor.
Karavostasi Beach is located 7 km from Perdika village. It is a popular beach with a long stretch of coarse white sand and deep blue waters. The green hills on the right and left side of the beach create a fascinating picture. It has rooms for rent, hotels and tavernas.
Mega Ammos Beach is located 1.5 km from Syvota village. You will find the sheltered beach with white pebbles and turquoise waters simply amazing. You will see a beautiful picture where the blue hues of the waters blend wonderfully with the green shades of the land. It is a beach for water sports fans, offering also other facilities; there is a taverna and a nearby cafe.
