Guide to Igoumenitsa
The capital of Thesprotia is Igoumenitsa, a new, modern town, located in the lovely bay of the same name. Igoumenitsa Porta is the beginning (or end) of the Egnatia National Road and is vitally important to the national economy, forming part of the trans-European transportation network. You can relax and enjoy the sun and the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea on the many beaches of Thesprotia. Mile after mile of fine, golden sandy beach, alternating every now and then with others strewn with small, white pebbles. The area was a bridge between Greece and Italy and a haven for sailors, and today it welcomes tourist boats and travellers from the four corners of the earth.
Enjoy your holidays in Igoumenitsa, in the well-organised beaches with tavernas specialising in fresh fish and seafood, cafés and clubs, as well as remote beaches, chiselled by the winds and the seas, all with the ‘Blue Flag’ rating, leave the best impressions.
Cosmopolitan Syvota is the ‘flagship’ of tourism in Thesprotia. Swim and enjoy water sports on these marvellous beaches: Drepano in Igoumenitsa, Mega Ammos, Mikri Ammos, Zavia, Zeri, Pisina and Kokkinos Vrachos at Syvota, Naftilos and Kalami at Plataria, Karavostasi, Agia Paraskevi, Arillas, Stavrolimenas and Mega Drafi at Perdika.
The tiny island of Prasoudi in the bay of Igoumenitsa is, according to legend, the rock that the Cyclops Polyphemus hurled at Odysseas, and the islands of Syvota were also hideout for pirates.
Explore the ancient and Byzantine monuments in the region: Ragio Tower, the fortified settlement of Fanoti at Parapotamos, the ancient settlements at Polineri and Vrachona, the castle in the park above Igoumenitsa, the ruins of the fort of Dimokastro in Perdika, the Venetian castle at Margariti, and the Church of Koimisis tis Theotokou (the Dormition) at Ragio. Admire the finds on display at the Igoumenitsa Archaeological Museum.
At Margariti there is a lake filled with waterlilies, and the Kalodiki marshland is a protected water biotope of unique natural beauty and importance. Book your accommodation in Igoumenitsa and start exploring Epirus.
