Epirus is easily accessible, given that the area is well served by Ioannina Airport, 4 km from the city center and 10 km from the University Campus. There are daily flights to and from Athens. Aktion Airport is approximately 90 km (1hr) from Ioannina, and it also offers daily flights to and from Athens, as well as many low-cost flights to and from various European cities. Aside from regular scheduled flights to and from cities in Greece and abroad, there are also charter flights from abroad during the summer season.
The port of Igoumenitsa offers a frequent ferry service to and from Patras, as well as to and from the ports of Italy, thus making overseas destinations easily accessible, while smaller boats provide services in the port of Preveza.
By road, Epirus can be reached from Western Macedonia via the Kozani-Ioannina National Road, or Egnatia Odos via Grevena and then Milia, near Metsovo. If you are travelling from Thessaly, the Trikala-Ioannina National Road provides easy access, and from Aitoloakarnania, you can take either the Antirrion-Ioannina National Road or alternatively the route via the Aktion undersea tunnel. The regular scheduled intercity bus service (KTEL) connects the most important towns and cities of Epirus with major cities throughout Greece. Bus routes in Epirus are serviced by the local urban and intercity KTEL buses, and the road network linking all of the villages and settlements is very good.
Ioannina is a hub in Northern Greece with access from Athens and Thessaloniki via the Egnatia Highway. There are regular, scheduled bus services to Ioannina from Athens, Thessaloniki, and other areas of Greece. A regular ferry service from Igoumenitsa to ports in Italy connects Ioannina to the rest of Western Europe.
Arta, which is 77km from Ioannina and 50km from Preveza, connects to the former via the Ioannina-Arta National Road. Arta can also be reached by air from the airports of Ioannina or Preveza, or by sea from the port of Igoumenitsa.
Preveza connects with Ioannina via the Preveza – Ioannina National Road and the new Ionia Odos (Motorway 5), which meets up with the old national road at Filippiada. There are frequent scheduled flights from Athens via the Aktion Airport, as well as charter flights during the peak tourist season. Bus connections between the cities and towns of Epirus are very frequent. The coastal Preveza-Igoumenitsa National Road links the two cities (a distance of 95km) and, by extension, connects Preveza to Italy and the rest of Europe.
The Prefecture of Thesprotia is a hub offering easy access for visitors from Patras and Italy by sea, from Ioannina and Preveza by air, and by road, from Athens via Preveza-Arta and from Thessaloniki via Ioannina and the Egnatia Odos (A2) National Road.
