This region, with its wealth of history, its mansion houses, and beautiful countryside, is made up of a group of traditional villages known as ‘Radovizia’. Here hard stone meets with the scent of fir and pine, and the shade of the plane trees. Hospitable local people, cold nights, warm hearts, and chestnuts roasting in the hearth, are just a few of the memories you will treasure forever.
The seat of the municipality is Ano Kalentini, while the historical capital is Piges Tetrafilia, where the Monastery of Seltsou, witness to the tragic martyrdom of its inhabitants, can be found. It is well worth paying a visit to the area’s churches and monasteries, the foundation of which dates back to Byzantine times. Skoulikaria was the birthplace of the great fighter from the 1821 Greek Revolution of Independence, Georgios Karaiskakis, and in his honour the ‘Karaiskakeia’ festival is held every July, while at Piges the ‘Seltso Festival’ takes place every August.
Hiking trails connect the picturesque villages, passing through scenery of unparalleled beauty. Seeing the wild horses in their natural environment on the Diaselo plain, as well as the Korakou bridge, the single-arched bridge at Mesopyrgos, the Rovelista Monastery, the traditional watermills and the stone-built fountains all make for an exceptionally special experience.
