Guide to Preveza
Preveza is built at the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf. The hundreds of sailing boats that dock in its safe waters lend a cosmopolitan colour to the city. At the same time, the fishermen who moor their boats at the quayside and sell their catch, along the seafront with the traditional buildings, serve to turn the clock back several decades.
The past remains very much alive in the historic centre with its quaint little alleyways, the Saitan Pazar (Devil’s Bazaar) and the Venetian tower with its famous sundial. Take a stroll through the streets of the town and around the harbour. You can enjoy local products of the Prevezian land, as well local delicacies such as grilled sardines and Ambracian shrimp, accompanied by wine, tsipouro or ouzo in the picturesque little tavernas. Take your holidays in Preveza, during the summer, when the city is turned into a cultural centre with numerous events, while in the winter traditional festivities, such as the carnival, take pride of place.
Historical memory is revived at the archaeological site of Nicopolis, the city founded by Octavian Augustus to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Actium (31 BC) against Anthony and Cleopatra. The walls, conservatory, the necropolis, theatre, stadium, the monument to Augustus, the thermal spring baths, the nymphaion (sanctuary), and early Christian basilicas with outstanding mosaics, have all been preserved. Educational programmes and interesting guided tours are held at the new archaeological museum of Nicopolis.
Take a fascinating tour of Ancient Cassope, with its stunning views over the Ambracian Gulf and Ionian Sea. At Zalongo, 410 steps lead up to the towering rock with its imposing monument commemorating the Souliot women who sacrificed themselves. The castles of Pantocrator, Agios Andreas, Agios Georgios and Riniasa will transport you back to bygone ages. Admire the magnificent monasteries of Agios Dimitrios at Zalongo, Avassos, Lekatsa in the forest of the same name and Profitis Ilias-Agios Ioannis Prodromos at Flamboura. Visit the Leandro Spartiotis Gallery at Agios Thomas and the Folklore Museum at Kamarina Zalongou.
Enjoy swimming and sea sports on the enchanting beaches of Kiani Akti, Mytikas, Kanali, Kastrosykia, Artolithia, Lygia and Vrachos. Choose Alonaki Beach and Monolithi Beach in Preveza to relax and have fun. The sunset over Pantocrator Castle and a cruise in the Ambracian Gulf to see the bottlenose dolphins, are experiences you will never forget. Experience the beauty of nature on the stunning hiking trails through the Lekatsa forest, along the banks of the river in the forest of Agios Varnavas or along the Acheron Gorge, where the enchanting riverside trail begins at the legendary Gates of Hades.
