Regional Unit of Preveza

Both the city of Preveza and the general, wider area will undoubtedly fascinate you with their ancient Greek findings and the post-Byzantine era artifacts. The city of Preveza is a pillar of attraction for the whole of Epirus, with a variety of artistic events, blended with unique archaeological monuments that spark the attention of thousands of visitors every year.

While the beautiful alleys of Preveza are themselves a work of art, we do recommend a visit at the “Ioannis Moralis” Municipal Gallery housed at the Athanassiadis Mansion, as well as a stop by the “Leandros Spartiotis” Private Gallery, a contemporary art gallery that praises painters of Preveza. The same artist has created the most extraordinary stage you will ever see, the “Opera of Water and Dream”, a theatrical stage 30 meters high, decorated with 30,000 cans of soft drinks.

Just a little outside the city of Preveza is the world famous Nikopolis, the largest surviving ancient city in Greece. It is built on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea, the Amvrakikos Gulf and the mountains, and its main monuments are the “Odeon” Conservatory, the Theater, the Monument of Augustus and the Basilica of the 1st Domiti. Tip: combine your walk around Nikopolis with the New Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis.

Kasopi stands as an example of a complete city constructed by the various tribes of Epirus during the 4th century BC. It is built on a plateau at an altitude of 550m at the foot of the Zalongos mountain range and gained its influence due to trade, livestock and the products of the fertile plains of Acheron.

You guessed it right, Acheron is the most famous oracle of the ancient Greek world. According to mythology, this is the point where Acheron and Kokitos, the two rivers of Hades–the God of the Underworld, join. This is also where the dead descended to the Underworld, while Efyra a little further north is associated with the ancient worship of the deity of Death. We highly recommend that you visit the oracle and take a boat tour in river Acheron.

What’s more, a variety of museums await around the Regional Unit of Preveza. See the Municipal Maritime Museum of Preveza, the Municipal Museum of Natural History in Neochori, where you will learn about the fauna and flora of the Amvrakikos Gulf. Also, in the Goura Folklore Museum in Kato Revmatia you will see old water mills and textiles of the everyday life of previous centuries, while Flamboura hosts the rich collection of collector Charalambos Gouvas: see the collection in the premises of the Museum of Arts and Sciences of Epirus.
