GUIDE FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF ZITSA
This area forms the geographical and historical passage that lies between the Ioanniotiko hinterland and the Ionian Sea. The prominent landmarks here are the bare ridge of Mount Kasidiaris, the Kalamas River with its beautiful valley, and also the Grammenochoria villages, the birthplace of a number of great benefactors (such as Zosimades, Kaplanis, and others). The natural environment is exquisite and unspoiled, with shady plane trees and slopes thick with cedar and holly oaks. Enjoy the beauty of the riverside landscape at Kalamas, and visit the mill at Despotiko or the Vrosina Bridge.
Take a guided tour of the Sanctuary of Zeus Areios and the ruins of Passaron, the ancient Molossian capital, near Gardiki. Visit the famous monasteries of Profitis Ilias at Zitsa, Pateron at Lithino and Paliouri.
The seat of the Municipality, Eleousa, is a growing town which is part of the greater Ioannina area, while Zitsa, which enchanted Lord Byron, is among the leading wine-producing centres in the country.
