GUIDE FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF ZIROS
Hiking along riverside trails, watching rare birds, fishing and many more activities make the area an all year round attraction. Stroll around the town of Filippiada, with the famous bell tower of Agios Vissarion and try to spot the storks which appear every year during the summer months. Admire the plane-tree forest at Agios Georgios with its Roman aqueduct, a major construction project, through which water was transported to ancient Nicopolis 50 km away. The enchanting Lake Ziros is an area of exceptional natural beauty and, combined with the protected ‘aesthetic’ forest area that surrounds it, the picture is truly magical. The lake is about 900m long and 600m wide and it reaches a depth of 70m. You can also visit the castles of Rogon and Pente Pigadia, and the Georgios Giannos Folklore Museum at Thesprotiko.
Between the mouths of the River Louros and the Arachthos, along the coast of the Ambracian Gulf, lies a wetland of incomparable natural beauty, protected by the Ramsar Convention.
Signs of human life in the area date back to prehistoric times at the Asprochaliko and Kokkinopilos sites, while at Kastri Gorgomylou there is an archaeological site of particular historical interest, the Ancient City of Orraon, also known as Kastropoli, the foundation of which dates back to the time of Cassope.
