GUIDE FOR NORTH TZOUMERKA

Perched on the rugged mountain peaks, like eagles’ nests, the villages of the Tzoumerka mountain range are considered to be part of an area of outstanding natural beauty. You will be enchanted by the intricate mountain terrain and crystal-clear rivers. The area is part of the National Park of Tzoumerka, Peristeri & Arachthos Gorge. You can find information about the park at the Pramanta and Chouliarades Visitor Information Centres.

Traditional settlements, such Syrrako and Kalarytes, as well as the numerous churches and monasteries, bear witness to its former glory.

Take the time to visit the monasteries of Kipina at Kalarytes and Tsouka, at Elliniko. Here at Elliniko you will also find the Theodoros Papagiannis Museum of Contemporary Art, dedicated to the renowned sculptor, whose works are constructed from recyclable materials and contain references to Epirus and its history. The stone bridge of Plaka at Arachthos, the largest single-arch bridge in the Balkans, was demolished in 2015 by the surging river waters. It has now been restored and stands once again in its proper place. It is an important historical monument, and a breathtakingly magnificent sight.

Near Pramanta, seat of the Municipality, you can visit the Anemotrypa Cave, with its three small lakes and colourful stalagmites in shades of grey, bronze and white.

The Arachthos and Kalarytiko gorges offer the ultimate adventure-lovers’ experience. Enjoy kayaking, rafting, canyoning and flying-fox, hiking, mountain-biking, climbing, abseiling and horse riding. At Pramanta in the foothills of Stroggoula, there is a mountain shelter for climbers in operation.
