Guide for the municipality of Souli
Souli lies between two historic rivers, the Acheron and the Kalamas. Rocky mountains, stony ground, harsh scenery, austere and unadorned. Indomitable people who chose a simple, frugal life, remaining wild and untamed. The Souliots came to settle in this land, keeping the flame of freedom ever burning in their hearts. Many of the eternal values and symbols that shine throughout the history of Greece sprang from the sacred rocks of Souli with enormous force and form. Take a walk over the sacred ground of Souli: Kiafa Castle, Zalongo, where the Souliot women danced over the cliff to their death, and Kougi, where the monk Samuel sacrificed himself. Here, every May, the Souli Festival is held to commemorate the sacrifice made by the Souliot women.
The seat of the Municipality is Paramythia. You can visit the Koulia Tower, the castle of Agios Donatos, the Byzantine baths and the Ringa mansion, as well as the settlement of Palia Osdina.
In antiquity most of the region was inhabited by Thesprotian tribe of the Eleates, a tribe that prospered greatly during the Hellenistic period. It is also worth taking the time to visit the archaeological sites at Elea and Fotiki. There are also some remarkable monasteries in the area: Panagia at Paramythia, the Dormition at Osdina and Paganies, and the hermitage of Agios Arsenios.
It is worth exploring the NATURA 2000 ecosystem at Acheron, a river of mythical and historical importance, and enjoying various alternative tourism activities (horse riding, rafting, canyoning, mountain biking) or you can walk the trails along the banks of the Acheron at Skala in Tzavelaina, at Gorila and at Agios Arsenios.
