Guide to Thesprotia
This area lies along the Albanian border, and was a crossing to Illyria ancient times. Most of its villages offer peace and tranquility. The landscape, with its oak-trees and lush green plateaus, is an ecotourism destination that The landscape, with its oak-trees and lush green plateaus, is an ecotourism destination that is well worth discovery. The area’s most impressive natural sites are the Gormos valley, the Kouvara Gorge, Lake Zaravina and the Glyziani waterfall.
The barren land and the fact that the area was treated harshly by the Turks lead to a great wave of migration. The pain of exile, deeply rooted in the Pogonisian soul, is strikingly reflected in their wonderful polyphonic songs. In Paleopirgos, Oraiokastro, Agios Kosmas and Kalpaki there are a number of traditional watermills and fulling mills, an active part of everyday life which are now listed monuments. The stone arch bridge at Gretsi is also worth a visit.
You can also admire the monasteries of Sosinos at Parakalamo, Vellas near Kalpaki (the seat of a well-known seminary) and Abel at Vissani. In the administrative centre of the municipality, historical Kalpaki, you can visit the Military Museum, which is dedicated to the period 1940 to 1941 and houses many items of memorabilia from the Greco-Italian War. There is also a war memorial dedicated to the Battle of Kalpaki which took place in 1940, with the bronze statue of the unknown soldier standing tall above the village.
