Guide to Parga
Overlooking Paxoi, Antipaxoi and Aktion, and the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea, is Parga, a bustling tourist resort with its lacework of inlets and crystalline seas, and its picturesque narrow streets. It is one of the main attractions in the Preveza region.
Parga town, a settlement dating back to the Byzantine period, was subject the influences of the Venetians, the British, the French and latterly, the Turks, from whom it was liberated in 1913.
Influenced by the Ionian architectural style, it is built like an amphitheatre along the slopes beneath the Venetian castle. Parga has a distinctive island character. Walking through the narrow streets leading up the hill, you will be surprised by the picturesque town with its cobbled paths and churches, and you will find the heady scents of the flowers and fruit trees intoxicating. A checkered history, emerald seas, olive groves, and colourful mansion houses. A series of lush green islets enclose the three coves in the bay. You will be enchanted by the small island of Panagia with its quaint little church. The shops, night clubs, bars and tavernas create a special atmosphere. Thousands of tourists from every corner of Europe visit the region each year. You can visit the Ecclesiastical Museum or the Agia Folklore Museum, the church of Panagia Vlachernon, the castle and there is an impressive waterfall at Anthousa.
