Kalamas Delta
Kalamas is the longest river in Epirus which impresses with its wild beauty. Just before joining the Ionian Sea, near the border with Albania, the Kalamas Delta, a triangle-shaped delta expanding over Igoumenitsa – Ragio – Sagiada which includes the estuaries of its old and new riverbed, forms an important wetland.
The area has been designated a “Special Protection Zone for birds” due to its rich biodiversity and it constitutes a significant destination for migratory birds.
The islets that are formed in the Delta are ideal for observing the thousands of birds that find shelter in the wetland. They are accessible by boat from Sagiada and the route along the way is captivating. The best observation point in the Kalamas Delta is the Mastilitsa hill, from where one can also see the wild horses that live there.
