Aoos Spring Lake
At the “Politsies” plateau, right in the heart of Pindos, at an altitude of 1,350m., a hydroelectric dam generating electricity created the Aoos Springs Lake, around which a stunning landscape was formed, in perfect harmony with the environment. It has been characterized as the most mountainous lake in Greece and what the visitor sets eyes on is impressive; the indented shoreline and the many islets that are formed inside the lake! The Aoos Springs Lake is located between two National Parks, Valia Kalda and Vikos-Aoos, and it is about 20km away from the picturesque Metsovo. Beech forests, black pine trees and robola create a breathtaking landscape, and many rare plants, such as wild orchids, grow next to the streams, filling nature with a stunning array of colors in the spring.
The avifauna in the area is also rich, with the most characteristic species being black storks, kingfishers and various species of ducks. The presence of bears, wolves, wild cats and roe deer is common. The fish fauna of the Aoos Springs Lake includes eels, common carp and trout.
The varied landscape, the astonishing colors and the extraordinary beauty, have designated the Aoos Springs Lake as one of the most popular destinations for nature lovers; there are also plenty of activities to try, such as mountain biking and hiking while enjoying wild horses grazing freely and listening to the serene nature sounds.
